PSYCHIATRY THAT'S
MORE THAN
A PRESCRIPTION
In-person Treatment for Patients in Tucson, AZ; Telepsychiatry for Patients in Washington and Arizona
S. Kelly Gupta, MD
Welcome!
I founded my practice based on the original definition of psychiatry: the healing of the soul. (In Greek, psych=soul and iatry=healing)
Psychiatrists rarely use words such as “healing” and “soul,” largely because the profession has shifted into a more mechanical enterprise. We psychiatrists have too often become “prescribers” who practice “medication management,” often losing sight of the people we treat and the many ways we can help them. Not surprisingly, the outcomes under this paradigm can disappoint and disempower.
My practice focuses on the humanity of my patients and creatively blends multiple healing methods.
Here are the key elements that define my work with patients
Multiple Treatment Approaches
Medication is just one of a multitude of effective treatment strategies. In many cases, medication is not the most effective approach, and in almost all cases the use of more than one treatment modality will yield the best results.

I incorporate:
-
time-limited psychotherapy
-
lifestyle interventions
-
judicious use of medications
-
coaching-based inquiry
-
evidence-based natural supplements

Full Spectrum of Care
Healing exists on a full continuum, with symptom improvement on one end and pure creation on the other. As both a psychiatrist and experienced coach, I can meet you wherever you are on your life journey.
Dethroning Diagnosis
While skillful diagnosis and treatment interventions are important, YOU are at the center of treatment. I believe each person is a complex ecosystem of various components (mental, emotional, social, spiritual, physical, and environmental). To that end, I will customize treatment in accord with the many interconnected threads of your life that create your experience.
The Relationship
Research consistently demonstrates that patients do not improve in a bubble, but instead within a container of care. Our therapeutic relationship has healing power and serves as the vehicle through which I deliver any form of treatment. We will create that relationship with ease and flow, and I will actively seek your input about what’s working well and where I can improve.
My style is highly collaborative. I thoroughly educate my patients regarding treatment recommendations and we make decisions together. My demeanor is both warm and direct. I love humor and appropriate irreverence. Additionally, I am not a blank slate and bring my own humanity into the room.
Recognizing Innate Health
Within each of us exists an innate health. It’s the very source of wisdom, insight, and change. Our suffering may obscure it like the clouds conceal the sun, yet it remains unyieldingly present. Part of my role is to help you access that health.
